Black and White Darkroom Holiday
This workshop provides a complete introduction to film and darkroom for photographers of all levels. If you have an interest in film, this workshop will teach you how to use a film camera, and how to develop your film and print photographs from negatives, back in the darkroom. Also included is a session on how to scan your negatives and digitally process them. Everything you need to enjoy this unique photography holiday experience is included. Each participant will get to use a 35mm film camera for the duration of the holiday, and you’ll also have a ready supply of film, filters, tripods, and many other accessories you will need as you learn!
Programme
1 session of 4 Hours
Arrive for check in and meet at An Portan in Dunquin for Tea and Coffee at 4.00 pm.
We’ll spend the first session visiting the local beach and rocky shoreline around Dunquin, an opportunity to relax and take in the wondrous surroundings that are to be found at the very edge of The Dingle Peninsula.
Starting at the very beginning with the film camera controls, we discover how to use the aperture, shutter and meter to obtain a correct exposure. If you can bring along a digital camera with manual settings, you’ll find this a great way to learn everything about obtaining correct exposure.
Following a short break, you’ll load a film in your camera and begin exposing your first film.
2 sessions of 4 hours
9.00 am. We’ll get familiar with the processing equipment and procedures before practising the film loading process and then doing it for real with the film we took yesterday evening. Once the films are processed and drying in the cabinet, we’ll take a break until the next session.
With the first film dry, the negatives will show us how well we’ve managed to expose the first film and we can address any issues before we head out into the fabulous landscape and expose another roll of film. During this session we also have the opportunity to try out and experiment with filters in B&W photography. Last task of the day is to develop and process these rolls of film, ready for printing tomorrow.
2 sessions of 4 hours
9.00 am With all the films dry, cut and inserted into negative sleeves, we’ll discuss the overall printing process before we each print a contact sheet, which provides us with a miniature of each photo to use as a guide for choosing which of our negatives to print full size. We’ll then begin printing our chosen negatives full size on to photographic paper using an enlarger and darkroom chemistry.
Following a mid day break we’ll take a look and experiment with some more advanced printing techniques that will allow us to alter the contrast and local density of our finished prints.
1 session 3 ½ hours
10.00 am.– 1.30 pm.
We’ll explore the various methods of how to process a negative into a digital image, including a full demonstration using a flatbed scanner and some examples of the software that is available.
The workshop closes with a full recap, where everyone’s welcome to ask any questions. We can discuss the various ways and methods for processing and printing film with limited space or resources and moving on to setting up your own darkroom.

ExcellentBased on 72 reviewsVerifiedAllen B18. September, 2023.Wonderful tour of some unique and photogenic spots. George knows some great spots and is easy to talk to about cameras and technique. We were looking for some off the beaten path spots and we found them.VerifiedThom B10. August, 2023.Great Custom Tour This review is long overdue. We booked a private, extended, all day custom tour with George last summer and it was great for me an my partner. He handled picking out all the stops, made changes based on the weather, and successfully avoided all the tour bus crowds. It was quite nice not having to worry about planning and driving all the day long, and he took us to some very nice photo spots we likely would not have found. He was a great, friendly tour guide, knowledgeable photographer and safe driver on those tiny winding roads. Would definitely recommend booking a tour with him!VerifiedMary Clare G11. July, 2023.Engagement & Couples Photoshoot - June 2023 We booked the engagement & couples photoshoot with George and had the best experience! Our photos turned out absolutely beautiful. During the photo tour we also got to see some of the most scenic parts of Dingle, George really knew all of the best places to go. We highly recommend this George & Dingle Darkroom!VerifiedKelli B14. George is awesome and brought that special/personal touch to our experience driving us around Slea Head Drive and used his years of experience to show us great views and tidbits of information along the way. My family really enjoyed the whole experience and we are very grateful we found George!! He was very helpful with explaining how to use our cell phones to take better pictures. He took many great pictures of our family with the beautiful scenary that we will treasure forever.VerifiedDavid U10. April, 2023.Great Experience! Even though the afternoon was rainy and grey, George did an excellent job of not only helping me to understand my camera more, but also took me to the most beautiful areas around Dingle. He asked me ahead of time what kind of camera I had and with just a few knowledgeable questions, completely planned our time for maximum results. No matter what your photography skills are, I feel that any time spent with George is well worth it!Verifiedheatherceline1. March, 2023.Great teacher George was professional and patient. He met me at my (low) skill level and improved my use of my cell phone. I also learned about composition and depth- of- field and took not-so-bad photos by the end of the day. Recommend!VerifiedSANGLIM3. September, 2022.A terrific experience indeed! Having been to Ireland once and knowing the many opportunities I would have to take landscape photos again, I was seeking out an expert who could guide me around the Dingle peninsula and offer professional input that might improve confidence and get more from my camera. My experience with George at Dingle Darkroom couldn't have been better. Exactly what I wanted to improve my photography skills and learn more about the area. George had a curriculum in mind, he immediately began to access my photography knowledge, and then appropriately offered suggestions both for how to take and where to take photos. I feel more confident about taking and sharing my photos and look forward to my next adventure in Ireland with George leading the way.VerifiedStephanie19.
