Sunrise over Ventry Harbour

This was captured from the “Maum Clossach”, the ancient pathway from Ventry Cross to Dunquin, which follows a mountain pass running over the saddle between the peaks of Mount Eagle and Croaghmarhin. This road forms the shortest route from Dunquin Pier to Dingle and was probably regularly used by the Blasket Islanders on their visits to town.

Amazing views are to be seen in every direction at various places along this pass. On the eastern side of the pass we have this view of Ventry Harbour, the southern side of the Dingle Peninsula, and across Dingle bay to the MacGillycuddy's Reeks (the highest mountains in Ireland), and the Iveragh Peninsula. To the north are views towards Smerwick Harbour and the Brandon Mountains. As you cross over to the western side of this pass there are fabulous views of Dunquin and the Blasket Islands.

This photo was taken during February 2019 just after sunrise. An Irish Navy vessel has moored for the night, taking advantage of the deep sheltered waters of Ventry Harbour.
